boiling panMany years ago, I was literally in a desert wilderness. A wise person with me on pilgrimage said, “It’s not what we do in the wilderness that matters, rather it’s what the wilderness does in me.” Here is a simple story to show what is meant by this.

They were having a right good moan, complaining to a colleague how hard life was and that it felt like a constant struggle. No sooner was one problem solved than another followed.

How many of us can sympathise with that feeling at times?

The colleague, who happened to be a cook, led them in to the kitchen and took three simple ingredients, and boiled up three saucepans of water.

As the pans began to boil, each ingredient was put into a separate pan. Potatoes into one, eggs into another and coffee beans into the last. As the pans boiled, they watched. “What was this all about anyway? What a waste of time!”

After some time, the heat was turned off. The cook asked, “What do you see?”

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” was the rather obvious reply.

“Look closer at each one” the cook prodded. The potatoes were soft, the eggs hard and the coffee tasted and smelled good which brought a smile to their faces.

The cook then explained the point of it all: the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same problem – the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but, in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg went in fragile with a brittle shell and came out hard,

The coffee was different; creating something new by changing both the water and itself. The aroma was nice and filled the kitchen.

The moral for the folk in the kitchen, and for us: are we potatoes, eggs or coffee? When hard things happen around us and life gets “hot”, importantly what happens within us?

As the saying goes: wake up and smell the coffee!

Anyone for a coffee? 🙂

Have a great week!
