Load shedding

load shedding

In his Workplace Word, this month, East of Scotland Regional Organiser Chic Lidstone asks, 'Have you ever felt like this?'

On holiday I saw a basket in a kitchen cupboard of the house we were staying in which read: “Load Shedding Kit”. I had no idea what it meant so I took the basket down and opened it and saw candles, a torch and lantern for when there was a power cut. Evidently, Load Shedding is another term for a power cut or outage!

It made me think about what we do when we are overloaded, like the socket in the picture. With a socket It is dangerous and can make a house burn down, but with us it  can cause burn-out.

Overloading can happen when you do too much for too long or try to carry too much. With electricity, we have fuses and trip switches to protect us, but when it comes to ourselves, we seem to think we can get away with it.

How do you recognise you are in danger of overload and what do you to protect yourself and Load Shed?  Here are some suggestions to put in your Load Shedding kit:

Socialise; get out with friends

Exercise; get some fresh air.

Sleep; a night’s sleep does wonders!

Relax; stop and breathe deeply.

Eat; get some good food inside you!

Don’t overdo the alcohol.

Talk to someone and work out what is making you feel overloaded and do something about it

Prevention; know your limits; your fuse rating!

I saw this quote recently:
“I wonder how much of what weighs me down is not mine to carry”.
