Listening Post

Listening PostEarlier this month, on the first day of Suicide Prevention Week, Workplace Chaplaincy Scotland, together with Chaplains from the Railway Mission and representatives from the Samaritans and Breathing, space held a "Listening Post" at Haymarket station. The aim was to raise awareness of the help that is available for those with mental health concerns as well as to be a listening ear for those who needed to talk then and there. A number of members of the public were glad to find out that there was immediate help available for friends and loved ones and there were also a number of significant conversations had with individuals during out time. It was a worthwhile day for all, and we hope to do it again in the near future!

Various articles by business leaders recently have commented on mental health issues in the workplace so, over the autumn, Palmerston Place church is hosting a series of lectures on

Well being in the Workplace. When chaplains talk with business leaders they recognise these issues have a tremendous cost on people's lives in terms of poorer health and relationships apart from the financial cost ( ).

Therefore it is increasingly important to recognise that we can all play a part in being agents of prevention rather than cure to support workforces. The three very experienced speakers are exponents of this principle, while often having to deal with the downside when things go wrong. The three speakers are a workplace chaplain, a psychologist and a trade unionist who will give their perspectives of how they meet the challenges of everyday working life and how they try to provide wellbeing in the workplace.
